Definitions and samples
- derive (v.) to come from, usually through a long, slow process
– The Cyrillic alphabet was derived from the Greek alphabet.
- detection (n.) when something is found that is not easy to see, hear etc, or the process of looking for it
– Early detection of the disease is vital.
- implement (v.) to make use of; to carry out
– Not until after the new software was installed could we implement the new filing system.
- maintenance (n.) the work needed to keep a road, building, machine, etc. in good condition
– The only problem with living in such a big house is that it requires a lot of maintenance.
- trigger (n.) a part of a gun which causes the gun to fire when pressed
– It’s not clear who actually pulled the trigger.
