Definitions and samples
- adjust (v.) to change something slightly, especially to make it more correct, effective, or suitable
– Instructors at the universities have been told to adjust their absence policies.
- cure (v.) make healthy again after suffering from a disease or medical condition
– Researchers are testing this spice as a cure for cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
- demote (v.) to lower someone or something in rank or position
– Two of the soldiers were demoted, and all three were ordered to forfeit their salaries.
- disappear (v.) to become impossible to see any longer
– He looked around for a moment then disappeared around the corner.
- dissolve (v.) if a solid dissolves, or if you dissolve it, it mixes with a liquid and becomes part of it
– Sometimes it’s as if someone put too much sugar in the tea and it won’t dissolve.
